2008 MW Region Final Results
July 15, 2008 – Madison, WI
The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) Midwest Region completed its league schedule for the 2008 season on Saturday, July 12. The result was the closest championship race in the Region’s history. Only a single point separated the top three teams. The championship could have been decided on July 5 when the first place Chicago Fire NPSL traveled to Madison, WI to play the Madison Princeton-56ers. A win by either team would have given them the 2008 Championship. But the resulting 1 to 1 tie gave a second life to the St. Paul Twin Stars, who needed a win on July 12 to win their first NPSL Midwest Championship when the Chicago Fire NPSL traveled to St. Paul. The Twin Stars took full advance of their opportunity with a 1 to 0 win to finish the league season with 12 points to 11 for the Chicago Fire NPSL and the Madison Princeton-56ers.
As the Midwest Champions, the St. Paul Twin Stars will now host a playoff game on July 19 against the NPSL South Region Champions, Atlanta FC of Atlanta, GA. The winner of this playoff game will go to the NPSL National Championships Finals on August 1 and 2 in Long Island, NY.
The determination of the second place finisher required a fourth level tie breaker as the Chicago Fire NPSL and the Madison Princeton-56ers were tied on the first three - head-to-head results, goal differential in the head-to-head results, and most wins. The fourth tie breaker was goal differential in conference play and Madison prevailed 12 to 6.
