Teaching "The Game"

The ability and quality of any soccer player can be assessed in 4 component areas:
  1. Technical Ability
  2. Tactical Awareness and Sophistication
  3. Psychological Characteristics
  4. Fitness and Athleticism
The goal of the 56ers Soccer Club is to develop each individual player to the best of their ability in these four areas using the most modern and successful training methodologies in the country. The end result of this process will be teams and players well prepared to play the game at the highest competitive level in the region.

Our athletes will learn to play possession-oriented soccer with a team determination to play attractively and with creativity.

Learning to play the game in this style is a long-term process, and initially, often comes at the expense of power, hustle, and winning. However, it is the players who are capable of playing in this manner that move on to be successful at higher levels and in different settings.

  • Individual technical ability is the most obvious and most important pre-requisite to play attractive soccer, and will be the focus of instruction for the first years in the program.

Though technical proficiency forms the basic building block for all other soccer learning, technical ability alone does not constitute a skillful player. A skillful player must apply the correct technique under pressure, and in order to do this, must be able to read and understand the game:

  • While players develop technical competence, they will be taught the principles of the game, and challenged to become more sophisticated in their tactical awareness and decision-making.

As players grow and mature in the program, psychological principles integral to success on the soccer field, but applicable in any field will be taught:

  • The importance of teamwork and personal responsibility, of perseverance and a strong work ethic, and of leadership and goal setting will be explored. The relationship between character and lifestyle choices to success and accomplishment will also be explained.

Finally, fitness and athletic training will be an important component of every age group's training. All of this training will be sport-specific, and virtually none of it will be done without the ball:

  • Agility, balance, and coordination training will be done even at the youngest ages, and acceleration and running technique will be trained continually throughout every player's career. As athletes physically mature, strength and power training will also be introduced.
The 56ers Club should be viewed as a school of soccer excellence for players committed to learning and success. Our club, and our training program, is designed to provide the necessary environment, support, and information to help all of our athletes reach their own goals.
